Beyond The Track Retraining the Thoroughbred from Racehorse to Riding Horse from author Anna Morgan Ford and Amber Heintzberger.

TheHorseStudio.com review: Part of the proceeds from the sale of this book goes to support the New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program of which Anna Morgan Ford has been Program Director for seven years. Awesome work! This book has been put together with true understanding of the life of a racehorse, his temperament and retraining issues that may arise.

Truly, I wish it had been available to me twenty years ago. What heartache it would have saved. When 37,000 racehorses are registered every year, this breed is a resource often utilized by the eventing and jumping world. This book will aid not only those riders seeking the superior athletic performance and intelligence of the breed, but also those wishing to rehab the thoroughbred as a trail riding partner, dressage partner and more. Anna Morgan Ford's credentials are impeccable, and her knowledge is conveyed with a logical and succinct approach. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on the common lameness and behavioral issues, and the adept way with which these are dispatched. Especially advice on handling 'grumpiness' and biting issues, and dealing with the recovery from steroid use. Highly recommended read.

Giving a horse a fresh start and making it work out the very best way for both rider and equine is the aim of this book. The book covers how to find the right horse, how to purchase from the track and understanding and working with the adoption process, to overcoming health and soundness issues to teaching important foundation skills. Also included is advice on instilling the half halt, canter work and leads and venturing outside the arena for the first time.

Anna Morgan Ford grew up on her parents farm in Dayton, Ohio, where racehorses where bred and trained. She rode both Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds and showed both heavily in a variety of disciplines. She was an exercise rider during college and is a World Champion saddle seat riders and has trained and instructed internationally as a Masters Certified Instructor through the Certified Horseman's Association. She has overseen the adoption of over 1000 retired racehorses and is a graduate of Ohio State University with a BA in Communications. Written with Amber Heintzberger, who is a freelance writer and journalist and is a multi discipline rider who resides in New York City.
