The Bit and the Reins Gerhard Kapitzke
990492
Developing Good Contact and Sensitive Hands. A wealth of information on the action of the bit based on anatomy and physiology of the horse.

How can you develop true harmony with your horse? What are the ingredients that a rider of any discipline can include in his daily work to ensure that the result is a positive and lively connection? Here are answers. Gerhard Kapitzke has studied the subject of the horse and his anatomy and behavior extensively at veterinary school and is a renowned expert on both, as well as a cavalry rider and now trainer based in Hannover, Germany. This book brings you an intensive study of the use of different sorts of bits, their action and their reaction.

Aside from the lovely photographs of many different breeds that guide you succinctly through each point made, and the overall high quality production from this publisher who always do a super job, the reader will be delighted with the text. In depth discussion here about how to hold the reins, multiple reins, mouth problems and how to resolve them, the trainer's body language and the use of auxiliary reins, use and action of jumper and dressage curb bits, the independent seat and collection in balance. Whatever bit question you've always wanted to better understand, it's all here.

thehorsestudio.com review: I thought I was pretty up on the whole bit issue, after forty years around horses. I was wrong. Some fine tuning here for many riders. This translation from the German publication in 2001, Zugelfuhrung mit Gefuhl, now published in the USA in 2004, is a gift to any rider in any discipline. A must read whether you are stepping into the world of riding or simply want to better understand what you are foisting on your horse when you select a bit. Easy to follow, knowledge leaps from the pages and the photographs are delightful. I recommend this book with its research and specifics to any trainer. No question better harmony and performance from the horse will result. I especially liked the section on the Spanish and Portuguese bridling traditions and the work on two lines and use of the cavesson.
