The Circle Of Trust; Walter Zettl. Reflections on the Essence of Horses and Horsemanship.

This book will bring the world of horses swiftly in to focus and will delight the horse lover with it's very good production and many photographs throughout. A very high quality production from the great master Walter Zettl who brings the horse front and center and reminds us all throughout the book that above everything the horse and his well being must always be the focus of our training, breeding and association with horses. The roles of all parties, breeder, trainer, owner, instructor, show organizer, judge, groom and judge are all discussed in detail with the wealth of Walter Zettl's knowledge of horses and personal experiences noted throughout. A super compilation here with the help of Prof. Paul Schopf and Jane Siegler.

thehorsestudio.com review: Walter Zettl's adherence to the classical principles of training horses is apparent throughout this book, and his kindness and keen regard for the horse is lovely to share - as his experience training in Germany as a young man shows us - the trainer must be a diplomat both in the saddle and working with the student. His accounts are frank and often humorous. Throughout the book there are many very good photos with credits and information on the horses and riders shown - and the entire book brings an inclusive nature to the reader with a generosity of sharing that is so a part of who Walter Zettl is - the chapter on classical versus 'competitive' dressage may raise some eyebrows - but you can always expect Walter Zettl to be frank, and this chapter written by Doris Halstead is interesting. I especially liked the story of Alois Podhajsky and his mare, a trainer who is one of my personal all time favorites. This is a very good read for anyone beginning out with horses and horsemanship, particularly those interested in dressage too. Also a good insight into Herr. Zettl and his mentor Dr. Aust - for the dressage enthusiast. Very good production from Half Halt Press.

Background on Walter Zettl: Born in Czechoslavakia in 1929, trained in Germany and won German Federation's Gold Medal at the tender age of 21, as well as receiving his Reitlehrer certification. In 1981 he moved to Canada and provided coaching to the Canadian Olympic Team.
