Donkeys. A Veterinary Guide for Owners and Breeders.
991420
Miniature donkeys, standard and mammoth donkeys are covered by Stephen R. Purdy, D.V.M.An essential manual for owners, breeders and veterinarians that covers how donkeys differ from horses and mules genetically, anatomically and medically. Also included is information on donkey behavior including handling, feeding, training, breeding and treating plus basic nutritional needs, treatment of parasites, infectious disease control, lameness, reproduction, pregnancy and foaling, castration, foal development.

TheHorseStudio.com copyrighted review: Every donkey owner knows that the average vet or tack shop owner may not have answers to address common issues that surround the donkey. For example safety practices for worming and parasite control is completely different from horses, breeding and the overall propensity for lameness through laminitis and other diseases is also unique to the donkey. Stephen Purdy D.V.M., has done a great job here addressing those questions and many more. The material is comprehensive and well written. A long overdue book ( I have never found anything similar on the market), in a quality production from our friends at Trafalgar Press - who can always be relied on for great content, editing, photography and overall caliber. As a donkey owner for 40 years myself ( sadly lost a 39 year old donkey last month), I can vouch for the issues that arise during such a lengthy lifespan and this book goes a long way to being a perfect resource for the donkey owner, breeder and vet student. I certainly learned things I wish I had known. Highly recommended.

Dr. Stephen R. Purdy received his DVM degree in 1981 from the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University. He is Associate Professor of Veterinary Education, Director of Camelid Studies, and Director of the Fund for Education and Research in Large Animal Veterinary Medicine, Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He is also the director of the Camelid Reproduction Center at UMass Amherst. Dr. Purdy’s special interests include reproduction, neonatal care, nutrition, and infectious diseases, as well as the preventive medicine aspect of the management of livestock. He is involved in practical research and educational projects that promote improvement of farm animal health, and he emphasizes a hands-on practical approach to caring for livestock, while keeping their environment as stress free and natural as possible. Dr. Purdy is committed to teaching practical large animal subjects to undergraduate and graduate students, and to helping undergraduate students gain admittance to veterinary school in preparation for a career as a large animal veterinarian. Donkeys have been a special interest of his since he first worked on one in 1995.  “If you are having a bad day,” he says, “spend some time hanging out with a donkey.”
