Herbal Horsekeeping by Robert McDowell and Di Rowling
990470
Great book for all the data you need on herbs and their use in the health and well being of your horse. Topics covered include the history of herbalism and how herbs work. How to grow and to prepare and store your own herbs - exactly how to prepare and feed the herbs and in what doses. Also the influence of herbs on the horse in general, the performance horse and for breeding horses.

There are recipes and case studies here too - use of herbs for preventative health care as well as post op care and for emergency first aid. Info on other modalities that compliment herbal horse care and science. The info here is very good - covers the details of it all. for example basic recipes for common ailments like show coat help, chest and immunity mixes, internal ulcers/scours, poultices, antiseptics, scar tissue help and tendon and bone mixes. A section on specific conditions like hoof, respiratory, bone and connective tissues, azoturia and many many more handily defined for quick reference. A good section on herbs and legality in competition, and interesting facts on uses in the performance horse. The book is a very nice high quality production with lovely color photos of all the herbs mentioned throughout plus a comprehensive Materia Medica ( list of herbs with their common and Latin names).

This book is written by Robert McDowell, a leading Australian herbalist - Australia known for being in general leaders in this field - trained as a medical and veterinary herbalist and quickly became one of the founding members of the industry body on alternative therapies in Australia. Originally from New Zealand, he expanded his full time herbal practice from human to animals due to so many requests for his help and today runs a very busy practice for same in NSW Aussie. Di Rowling, a professional graphic designer helped tool the book together and the very professional result makes it a great read, easy to assimilate and thorough in covering the specifics so you can go out and apply all that you've learned. A very good book. Recommended.
