Dressage In Lightness: from classical trainer Sylvia Loch; baroque horse photos galore and super text.

From renowned classical trainer and accomplished author Sylvia Loch - here is a book that actually manages to teach you 'feel.' Dressage in Lightness is a book for the rider of any level or discipline, that wants to improve their riding by understanding better just what the horse can achieve with the rider having the best and most productive posture. This is a book on how to school your horse - and is particularly beneficial for those working alone.

It is a different How To book for many reasons - The rider is asked to imagine what the horse feels as we sit on the horse's back and ask him for figures and exercises - and the rider is then taught how to refine their technique through correctly adapting their weight to the horse's movement. You may have often heard about the 'invisibility' of a rider's seat aids - the horse is capable of such incredible discernment of our weight when we sit upon his back. By learning and applying the weight aids correctly ( obviously aided with the leg, hand, voice too), we have a heightened sense of feel and oneness in the partnership with the horse.

thehorsestudio.com review; Sylvia brings no nonsense advice through every aspect - from the theory to the practice - from the starting canter aids to the Spanish Walk and piaffe/passage. She cleverly demonstrates the natural movements of the horse using a foal with great photography of just how the horse moves mechanically - what are the horse's reflex spots? How to you utilize the converging energy? How can visualization help? Plus an appendix with interesting viewpoint on the long, low, deep and round - benefits/warnings/what is appropriate? What is the 'nutcracker' action in the riding trot then facilitates the horse to trot forward in an 'uphill' stance. Whether you want to school flying changes easily or just improve your leads and transitions for the ring - it's a super book armed with lots of photographic and diagramatic help.

Loved this book. Sylvia has been writing books and studying dressage with some of the finest in the world for many years in addition to her own extensive experience running very successful yards stock full of super Iberian bloodlines. She lived in Portugal for many years and formed strong ties with the whose who of all in the world of the Baroque Horse. She has left no stone or access unturned in summoning up this wealth of info and the writing is charming. Though it is a very big book it is a very flowing and enjoyable read cover to cover. As a frequent visitor to Portugal and Spain myself I am familiar with her former riding school in Loule , in the Algarve region of Portugal- I just wish I'd visited it while she was there! -She returned to Britain and after running a superb Equitation and Lusitano stud while married to Lord Henry Loch -after being widowed she moved and now has one of the most beautiful yards on the Scottish borders where her Lusitanos and her well respected training draw classical riders seeking her fantastic inspiration.
