Dressage The Art of Classical Riding Sylvia Loch.
990433
Foreword Brigadier General Kurt Albrecht. One of my favorite books.

From one of the best known advocates for the true classical art of dressage this is a significant body of work that takes us through 2000 years of dressage as it has developed around the world. From Xenophon to Klimke - the worlds greatest classical masters are documented. The influences of each stage in development including some lesser known names such as King Duarte of Portugal being placed between Pluvinel and Xenophon in terms of importance - the role of every major player in this classical art throughout time - is elegantly and beautifully documented and told. Folks talk of the French school, the German school, Fillis, Baucher, Steinbrecht, Oliviera and Podhajsky - but it's easy to mix them all up.

You might have read some of their books and know their methods but the reasoning behind how they were arrived at, why, what the issues of the day actually were - all make for an enlightened read. Kings and Queens, Empresses and royalty around the globe all guided and styled the resulting art of dressage as we know it today. Sylvia, as usual, does a very impressive job of encapsulating all this material and history together, binding it delicately with her wit and super writing style and adding more than a dash of some of the greatest art work in a literal sense to herald you through the pages.

A superb piece of work here and well worth the read and knowledge for any dressage aficionado that wants to better understand all the various methods and how they fit into the bigger picture. Plus enjoy the later chapters covering the more modern day, Robert Hall, Jennie Loriston-Clarke, Klimke plus Anne Grethe Jensen and so many more - the discussion of the masters that so influenced the quest for Olympic Gold - Highly Recommended read for any serious dressage rider.

Sylvia Loch is world renowned as one of the best experts around in the art of classical riding. She has long been a well respected writer and has produced many successful titles over the years. She lived extensively in Portugal and later returned to the UK to Suffolk where she and her husband Lord Loch - who had introduced her to the Iberian horse - began one of the finest classical equitation schools working with Lusitanos. Sylvia's education and understanding of the world of The High School and the Iberian breeds is astounding - a superior advocate for the art.

Following her husbands' death she moved north to the Scottish borders - where she operates a highly regarded dressage yard where students from around the world flock. Sylvia also founded the Classical Riding Club in 1995 with members around the world but especially the USA and UK. Her challenge was to bring the Iberian horse into a better understanding around the world and to preserve the ethics of the art of dressage through educating us all - and there is no question she has succeeded in admirable style. A truly definitive work here and one you will keep for life.
