The Story of the Andalusian and Lusitano Horse $10 off

This is a huge book and is so accurate and well researched that any lover of horses in general will enjoy reviewing it and any lover of the Baroque Horse - will be exceptionally delighted. As Sylvia has taken the story text so in depth and covered not just the pre Roman history to the modern day history of the horse as a war mount and more, but also covered extensively it's influence on many other breeds of the day like the Thoroughbred, Horses of The Americas and others plus given a super insight into history as a whole...any horse lover will also enjoy the Tour.

With the aid of some truly superior artwork that Sylvia somehow managed to obtain permission for reproduction in these pages - from some of the world's largest and most prestigious art galleries and art collectors -Sylvia brings the history replete with the chauvinistic and gallant charms of the days, the vibrant and colorful life - i particularly love the photo of the horse jumping from a boat to land during the production of a war movie - says it all about the noble nature of this intelligent Royal horse.

Iberian horses are very popular for their courage in stunt work in the movie industry. The book encompasses all the horses of the Iberian Peninsula - not just the Andalusian and Lusitano - but such breeds as Zapatero, Carthusian, Alter Real, and many more. The early history from Greeks and Romans - plus the development of the Barb or Berber. The Arab influence and Moorish invasion of the peninsula covered well here. Plus the age of chivalry and horses in ancient Britain - Norman invasion and Crusaders, Pilgrimages and the Great Tournaments. Plus The Age of Revival, the Cavalry and Sporting Horse. An in depth look also at the history and culture of both Portugal and Spain. The Corrida with a neat look at unforgettable moments - to present day horse breeding in the peninsula.

How colts are selected, the Great Families, etc. Breeding is well discussed including the emergence of two types within one breed and the selection process and it's reasoning in Portugal. Sylvia brings her superior knowledge of Classical work in the chapters on the great Iberian schools. Nuno Oliveira of course, Portuguese and Andalusian School, Doma Vaquera, Picadeiro. The royal mares of England have a chapter all their own as does British breeds with Iberian influence - Welsh cobs and British Appaloosa, Irish and Connemaras to name a few. A good chapter here on the Duke Of Buckingham and the establishment of Newmarket during the Brit coverage. Plus the Conquistadores and The Horses Of The Americas - USA, quarterhorses to Peru and Argentina- Cortes and his horses. Finally a look into the future chapter. There is some good advice here for those wishing to purchase an Iberian horse, generously shared and very good advice it is too.

Sylvia has been writing books and studying dressage with some of the finest in the world for many years in addition to her own extensive experience running very successful yards stock full of super Iberian bloodlines. She lived in Portugal for many years and formed strong ties with the whose who of all in the world of the Baroque Horse. She has left no stone or access unturned in summoning up this wealth of info and the writing is charming. Though it is a very big book it is a very flowing and enjoyable read cover to cover. As a frequent visitor to Portugal and Spain myself I am familiar with her former riding school in Loule , in the Algarve region of Portugal- I just wish I'd visited it while she was there! -She returned to Britain and after running a superb Equitation and Lusitano stud while married to Lord Henry Loch -after being widowed she moved and now has one of the most beautiful yards on the Scottish borders where her Lusitanos and her well respected training draw classical riders seeking her fantastic inspiration.

A super book. Enchanting. Highly Recommended.
