I grew up in England and often helped starting out young horses on a neighboring farm. Developing the horse from the start to accept such things as traffic including big trucks on single lane country roads, loudspeakers, music, equipment, flags and other everyday items was always in the curriculum. There's no question that training your horse to respond to whoa, with a whoa, is very important and can save you and your horse from serious injury. You never know when a kid is going to run shrieking about the showgrounds , or a horse needs to stand quietly when a hot air balloon is being started off in the field next door, or a chopper will be landing at a neighbors garden ( yes, those things have all happened to me and my horse when attending competitions or riding out at home). Handling, turning, driving, tacking up for the first time and much more. In England a bombproof horse or pony, sells for more money and is gamely advertised as such. Imagine the stress reduction and good health it also provides for your horse when he can understand his environment or a new environment quickly and without fear. Very enjoyable, well written with great examples. You'll read it from cover to cover and implementing these techniques should be a must for all horse owners. Highly recommended. Excellent book for any riding school owner or trainer of therapeutic horses.
