Horse Master Monsieur de Pluvinel Classical French Dressage: Dressage afiocionados will love this book.

For the dressage aficionado this lovely book from UK Publisher J. A. Allen brings the master Pluvinel and his conversation as master ecuyer to the King of France when asked what one must do in order to become the perfect Horseman.

Maneige Royal by Monsieur de Pluvinel is a work of some dry wit and humor especially as we look back at some of the pointers of the age. After the 'gentling' of Xenophon, also listed as a title here on our listings, the complete subrogation of the horse to it's master was renewal of the medieval riding, and this work brings the succinct advice of Pluvinel to his King. The French considered their horsemanship to be the crowning glory to their successes in Europe. Some poetry also here and some superb reproductions of the copper plate engravings of the airs of haute ecole of the day.

Based on the work of 1626, published by J A Allen in 1969 and introduced by Alois Podhajsky, this is a lovely read from cover to cover. We may not need to know what color or design the feather in our cap should be or how to hold the lance, but much of the advice as to what made a good horseman back in the 1600's hold true today - voltes are the most important movement for example, that the rider must be fit as his horse. The plates showing the figures used in the school are interesting especially with the mathematical explanation shown.

Very high quality book and comes in it's own special protective sleeve neatly wrapped in brown paper. Very European and this nice packaging adds a flair to making the book a super gift.
