The Riding Teacher Alois Podhajsky of The Spanish Riding School Of Vienna.

Hard to Find Title. Out of Print. A must read for any trainer or student of horsemanship.

TheHorseStudio.com review.. I was fortunate enough to grow up working with a student of the great Alois Podhajsky. From age 11, I was taught extensively using the classical methods of this Director of the Spanish Riding School. This book is a real help for the trainer. Colonel Podhajsky explains the psychology of riding and the relationship between teacher, rider and horse. In detail he provides outlines for lessons and how to work with students in groups as well as one on one. Also detailing the advantages of the group sessions for the rider and his horse in the training process. The book covers the theory of riding as well as advice on how to actually best instruct the student, and how to overcome obstacles along the way. The recalcitrant student, the difficult horse and setbacks that commonly occur are dealt with in his inimitable kind and coherent manner. A truly definitive work on that all important role of mentor and coach, it is no wonder that this work has been republished so many times since 1973. The foreword here is from classicist Sylvia Loch. It is useful not just to trainers but also to riders that work alone and need a clearer understanding of the training process including preparation or competition. This book is a real classic. Highly Recommended.

Colonel Podhajsky was born in Austro-Hungary in 1898. He was severely wounded during his time as a cavalry officer and after the war became an officers riding instructor. He won a medal at the 1936 Olympic Games and in 1939 was appointed Director of the elite Spanish Riding School of Vienna. in 1945 he led the famous white stallions to safety before Vienna was overrun by Russian troups. They returned to their baroque hall in 1955 to become one of the wonders of the world. Colonal Podhajsky was revered as a classical trainer during the post war era and wrote ten books. He died in 1973.
