The Veterinary Care Of The Horse Super tome of information Imported from U.K. Revised and enlarged 2nd Edition.

When the vet leaves it isn't always easy to recall all the details of what was said and sometimes you need to figure out exactly what is going on with your horse to make a decision on calling in the vet. Here is a super tome stocked full of answers that is clear and extremely well documented throughout with color plate photos to aid in your understanding and diagnosis. The book is well laid out for quick finds and has a good starting point with advice on how to maintain a healthy horse with good preventive care. A must have book in the barn.

Chapters include :- Preventive care - vaccinations; dentistry; foot care: Signs of Ill Health; lots of super help here from increased pulse rates to dehydration to depression or lying down more than usual, discharges, breathing patterns and rates, loss of appetite; lameness and much more. Especially helpful detailed instructions on what to do while waiting for the vet , wound assessment. Lots of specific advise on exactly how to assess e.g. taking temperature, pulse check, bleeding controls wound dressings, poultices (types and application), extensive advice on bandaging and wound dressing including handling minor issues. A chapter on examination of lameness and definitions, when to call the vet, how to examine the poor performing horse. Then the healing chapters; imaging techniques, diagnostic techniques, radiology, ultrasonography, scintigraphy, magnetic resonance imaging, thermography, arthroscopy are all thoroughly discussed with their pros and cons. A very detailed chapter then addresses issues specific to the foot of the horse, and more chapters then work logically through the horse e.g. tendons, joints, bone issues, synovial effusions, muscle disease and neurology, spine and pelvis including here saddle fitting. And in true thorough British fashion lots of details on complementary therapies like acupuncture, chiropractic, homeopathy, hands on healing energy. Then chapters on respiratory conditions, circulation and heart issues, digestive system, reproduction, endocrine disorders, eye injury and disease, behavioral problems. Do you own a donkey? A special chapter just for donkeys included. And if all this still isn't enough we have chapters on pre-purchase exams, blood tests and how to interpret results, equine general anesthesia, how to administer any veterinary procedure. Plus euthanasia, insurance and how to make claims, second opinions, handling stall rest, identification of horses, fly control and irritation, medicine storage and how to give injections IM, drugs and the competition horse, transporting your horse. WOW!

thehorsestudio.review; This book is an absolute must have for any horse owner, trainer or rider. FEI vet Karen Combe (MA VetMB CertEP MRCVS has done an awesome job with the editing to ensure that the information is quickly available as a reference guide in emergencies. She studied at Cambridge while author Sue Devereux graduated from Oxford then on to Bristol University. The author has done a great job of identifying exactly what we all need to know to make sound decisions quickly and with good education. I especially appreciated the excellent photography that brings a quick tool for analysis of a problem. Lots to learn here even for the more experienced horse owner.
