Whether you have personally witnessed hyperflexion in action, from the icons and world class riders in our sport such as Anky van Grunsven and Isabell Werth - amongst many many more - you will have a very definitive opinion on the subject. This book serves as a complete guide to both the physical and mental effects of the methods of non classical methods and is extremely plain spoken and provocative. Certainly the classical masters of our generation such as Dr. Reiner Klimke would agree with the classical versus modern approach - many articles have been published in magazines such as Dressage Today and Horse and Hound by Dr. Gerd Heuschmann that illiterate the shortcomings of the short cuts.

This book has very good photography taken from public competition where the riders faces are 'hidden' so you may clearly see the prevalence and the reward system that has been in place in the show ring as you will still recognize perhaps the identity of the horses. The effects of schooling techniques on the anatomy and well being of our horses are well documented here. Very good detail, easy to understand and to assimilate. The writing is explicit and the offer is made of the classical approach to the same training or movement or gymnastic exercise - giving you the trainer the opportunity to clearly choose.

This is a very informative work, well researched and documented and well overdue. This release is a 2007 release in English and we are pleased that the publisher has gone forward and provided us with this valuable advice. Some superb photography, well written text. No meant as a complete training aid, but certainly lots of very astute observations and training pointers. Whether you are a judge, a trainer or a competitor, this is a super book. Correct physiological training and development, the art of dressage and the true well being long term of our equine partners is paramount, and this book is a super start in the right direction. The clinical observations are instructive to any of us that have the responsibility of training young dressage horses and their riders, building the correct foundation and way forward. As Dr. Heuschmann honestly states, vets create for themselves a sin, of omission. They look for the lameness, not the cause.

As Isabella Sonntag, publisher of the German edition Tug Of War states, Time is what the horse needs most and your patience is the most precious gift you can give.

Highly recommended.
