TheHorseStudio.com review: The Whole Dog Journal: Handbook for Dog and Puppy Care and Training. 2008 release.

Holistic care for dog owners that want to learn the latest remedies, positive training methods and new specialties such as canine acupuncture and chiropractic care. It's not hard to convert me to the benefits of acupuncture and alternative care because I regularly visit with an acupuncturist to treat my arthritis, peptic ulcer and whenever I fall off a horse and need some additional treatment. So I know it works.

When it comes to taking care of your dog or puppy, then certainly modern modalities have made leaps and bounds. In addition so has the alternative care world. But, you need to be knowledgeable and this is just the book to educate you. Author Nancy Kerns provides a step by step approach to training using positive techniques. She also provides keen advice on dog nutrition and feeding as well as addressing in detail herbal remedies, homeopathy, massage, chiro and acupuncture. There are sensible separate chapters on senior needs, puppy needs and canine cancer. Plus easy to assimilate vet care for all aspects of canine health.

A myriad of co-authors bring that special expertise, including Pat Miller, CJ Puotinen, and Dr. Randy Kidd. Additional details on how to have fun with your dog and how to develop a stronger bond between you and your dog are very interesting. Does your dog fear men? How do you train your dog to overcome fears? Some extremely sensible advice here to solve just about every problem that is very easy to put to work yourself. Included is great advice on how to choose any provider, be it a massage therapist or holistic vet. I have owned many dogs in my life and regret that much of the earlier dogs that I took on as strays or bought from breeders did not benefit from this kind of knowledge. Sometimes kindness however well meant just isn't enough knowledge and this book surely provides some excellent advice. I highly recommend it.
