Workbooks from The Spanish School. Charles Harris
991147
Dressage aficionados are going to love this book. A super honest, brutally frank autobiography from Charles Harris that chronicles his Jewish childhood through to his acceptance at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria.

The text is illuminates the cultural issues he faced, the ongoing incidents with the British Horse Society and the 'gangs' of the day there. Mentions of Sylvia Loch and her husband and Colonel Williams and others of the moment and experiences with Oliveira, the account of the search for breeches and boots so that Harris could work with Oliveira on impulse. The tutoring of the revered Alois Podhajsky, and the promises Harris made to Podhajsky eventually causing a rift between Charles Harris and his friend Sylvia Loch and her writings.

So then as today, always frank and open discussion on the various techniques and interpretations of the classical art. Mentions of court proceedings and Charles being called as an expert witness are recorded in detail and the 'manual' the day handily criticized for causing accidents, and thus requiring improvement.

The workbooks that are Charles' Harris capturing the everyday lessons at the Spanish School for three solid years, are inspiring and great fun to read, and parts will amuse the reader with their honesty. The training information detailing such things as lateral movements made on a shortbacked horse will be enacted quicker than on a long backed one are quite marvelous, and there are lots of tips here for the professional rider as well as the amateur. A great addition to the library.

thehorsestudio.com review; wow! what fun - really enjoyed this book from cover to cover. Lots of insights into the politics of the day as well as real time advice on the ins and outs of training practice with The Spanish Riding School. These memoirs of Charles Harris are well told and the accounts of his early life and his determination to overcome a seriously hard childhood to be accepted as a pupil to the Spanish Riding School and to further engage in the art of dressage are extremely frank. A highly controversial figure, Charles Harris certainly didn't hesitate to make waves and stand up for the art of dressage as he understood it. There are sad parts and happy parts, educational parts for dressage trainers of course in the workbook, but also much to be learned about life in general from Charles Harris. Loved it!
