Klaus Balkenhol; Dressage Riding with Horsemanship. Let the horse be a horse, and act accordingly.

This is an extensive look at the life and times of the 2x Olympic gold medalist and chef d'equipe of various national teams over the years, and the account is just like you would expect if you've ever met or been privileged enough to train with this super kind horse master - quiet, thoughtful and honest.

With his wife and daughter he brings his family background front and center, taking literal trips down memory lane in his trusted Volkswagen bug to revisit the farm of his childhood. Sitting by the fireside he refreshes your spirit with his narrative of experiences with horses and his love of those who acted as mentor to the unassuming young Klaus. While his eyes mist over with obvious heartfelt respect as he recounts his earliest trainer, he also shares the humorous moments of his life. The horse 'whose tongue followed him everywhere' just as his mentor had stated it would - the highs and lows with Goldstern. Mention made of politics and real world sport at the top level, plus plenty of focus on Klaus riding and training his horses. Harry Bold and Anton Fischer, sit alongside the ring and there is some super footage of Klaus on the podium with the also great Dr. Klimke in 3rd place beside.

From his students such as Nadine Cappelmann and Gracioso, to his obvious delight in showcasing his daughter Annabelle, you enjoy the opportunity to watch Klaus train riders as well as horses. As police life was a 20 year part of Klaus history and of his success and learning, you share in the novel experience of just how police horses are trained to expect the unexpected. The choice and selection of horses is covered plus the advocacy of keeping the horse in as natural an environment as is feasible is addressed. Klaus is shown riding in fields, down roads, as a young man and as the icon he is today with all the world class achievements under his belt in the international arena.

Also included the Albion saddle maker and their visit to Klaus's stables, and work between Linda Tellington-Jones and Klaus and his daughter with the new horse. The affinity and respect for the horse and for people, that Klaus quietly emanates throughout this film, is inspirational. Sit down with a cup of tea and really enjoy this walk through his life - some good tips for the trainer here - as Klaus says, 'still learning.'
