This is actually a combination of three of John Steinbecks' short stories that create this well told movie that has a rich score as well as 91 minutes of high drama and action. When the young Tom Tiflin turns to hired hand Billy Buck ( Robert Mitchum) for the love and support he can't find from his parents, Tom's father attempts to bridge the gap with a gift of the red pony. When the pony becomes the focus of Tom's life as he raises it, the family relationship becomes more strained especially when the pony becomes sick and disappears. The celebrated production weaves a super tale and the movie provides great entertainment for the whole family with some good life lessons thrown in.
