Amid the excitement of the arrival of a valuable show horse from France, Carole believes her friends have forgotten her birthday. The champion horse Hugo escapes and Carole and her friends eventually find him. A surprise birthday party delights Carole, and the group learn that the horse belongs to a French dressage champion, Dorothee Doutey. Following her fall and major injury six months before, Dorothee has shattered her confidence with horses and with her horse Hugo. As she become the riding instructor at Pine Hollow, the lessons she learns from the saddle club girls helps her to overcome her fears and to heal her emotional wounds.
