Opening with a classic picture of the four Princes - Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince Harry and Prince Philip - this is a beautiful book covering the history of one of the oldest polo fields in Europe - well Smith's Lawn was used back in the 18th century for the Duke of Cumberland's racehorses - but with the Royal Guards on one side and Windsor Equestrian Center on the other - Smith's Lawn has always been a great spot to view the best horses and players in the world, particularly playing polo. Our author here, J N P Watson was a former major in the Royal Horse Guards ( Blues) and represented polo teams in Germany, Spain and North Africa and played for several season's on Smith's Lawn. He was also an feature writer for the UK Mag Country Life for over 20 years and writer at the London Times - and as Prince Philip says you have to know polo to write about it. No question the text here is very well written and offers a superb insight into the world of polo at this level over the period 1955 through 2005. The photographs are amazing and the topics covered are everything you could want to know including: Flemish Farm ( over 100 polo ponies live here) polo Secretaries and Chairman, a good cross section of all the players, The International Day and Royal Heritage, Chief Executives, Head of Groundsman, Stewards, Vets and Medics, Schools and Varsity and more. From Oliver Ellis to The Queen, from Sir John Miller to Bill Olive - everyone is here. There are also some lovely Appendix - the closure in 2005, 1955 order of go for the ponies sent by memo to Lt Col. Douro from Sir John Crocker Buterel, special section on the 1990's, more info on the famed Flemish Farm today and the 2001 antics ground rework project and the ups and downs and assessing the polo pony. Lots of humor here for example, first match here in 1872 - a chronicle tells us about the ponies being 'drenched' with cunning concoctions at frequent intervals while the participants were given cooling. A bit more leisurely than present day.

An exquisite book that comes gift packaged in a super matching box cover and is finished in old fashioned linen - high quality production - a thoughtful statement gift for the polo aficionado. Also fills a nice spot on the coffee table - you can be sure it'll be well read.

Recommended read for anyone who was there, or would like to have been there and wants to know what went on.
