3. Training Showjumpers: Anthony Paalman. The new and revised edition of the international bestseller on horse training.

Direct from the U.K. this book is the standard text for showjumpers over the pond. Lots of material here from tack and care to the novice horse. There is in depth advice on the first year of schooling: free exercise and lungeing, the use of the whip and which tack to select. An advocate of the Natural Method, Anthony Paalman discusses here the use of different bits and equipment, the chambon and gogue; how to build fences for free jumping; advanced level jumping lanes and disadvantages of jumping on the longe.

Then jump into 'making the mouth', developing musculature and rein backs before heading into flatwork and dressage for jumpers. There is a good chapter here on a suggested schooling schedule for the first year. Then to the second and third years. From flying changes to one sided horses, what to do after a refusal and careless forelegs. Paalman addresses junior riders here specifically, and the showground and competition and how to handle your horse in a variety of circumstances and mishaps. Finally a chapter on course design including terrain, fences, and how to build water jumps and show problems.

Anthony Paalman, extremely well respected horseman and trainer has been National Coach to many countries including Ireland, Mexico and Switzerland. He has helped make several international riders and his background in the Royal Dutch Cavalry School brings the Natural Method front and center in his training approaches.

There is a tome of information here and following the advice and schedules will bring you and your horse confidence as you step into the ring.
